Cosmos (ATOM) aims to solve the issue of interoperability between separate blockchains, creating a network of blockchain networks, dubbed the internet of blockchains. Currently blockchains and the transacting between them is siloed, which restricts development and relies on the already existing infrastructure which can lead to issues surrounding scalability and usability. Cosmos aims to change this by utilising open source tools to allow for interoperability by monitoring every blockchain in the network, known as a zone. Zone’s are independent and benefit from the full functionality of that network, allowing them to complete all tasks and execute any activities that the network would normally complete (transactions, voting, new token distribution etc) without any disruption to Cosmos. The Cosmos Hub is the place where all these zones (or blockchains) are connected. Every zone is connected to the hub through the protocol and maintains a constant record of the stare of each zone. Once a zone is connected to the hub, this can be used across all others connected to the hub. The ATOM token itself is used to secure the Cosmos Hub and the interchange services it provides. This is a proof of stake concept which allows for rewards in the form of newly minted ATOM and a share of transaction fees collected by the blockchain
